Neonatal Nurses

What am I?

Who am I?

When they hear my first scream when I’m a baby what do they think I’ll be?

Do they think I’m going to be another label?

Just another generalization?

I’m just a girl.

I’m just a simple name.

I’m just a baby.

I’m just a speck.

I’m just a female.

I’m just an Indian.

I’m just a number.

I’m just another one.

What do they think I’m going to be?

When they take me away from my parents to give me oxygen, to clean me up, do they look into my eyes?

To see who I might become?

Do they wonder?

Do Neonatal Nurses wonder about the babies they take care of and who they might become one day?
